Vitreoretinal surgery has been the most astoundingly innovative subspecialty of
ophthalmology in recent times and European ophthalmologists have been and are
continuing to play major roles in keeping this an exciting and dynamic field.
Spending too much time in the operating theatre, however, and being hampered by
national and language barriers, European vitreoretinal surgeons have not had much
time to notice that Europe is rapidly uniting. The implications for their practice
and for the future of vitreoretinal surgery have not yet been considered but are
likely to be tremendous.
A group of high-volume European vitreoretinal surgeons have now decided to become
active in uniting European colleagues by establishing the
European VitreoRetinal Society
Please join us in establishing a powerful representation of Europe's vitreoretinal
surgeons !
Our aims are to :
. Facilitate dialogue among European colleagues.
There should be as much communication among our European colleagues as there is
with our American ones.
. Promote European ideas and techniques.
How many of us have felt isolated and distraught when defending their ideas on
the international scene ?
. Become active in politics to ensure that we can
provide our input in Brussels in matters concerning our future interests.
. Develop and promote new methods of teaching and
student/master interaction in this highly complex field.
Two different types of teaching are planned with :
- An annual congress in
a different country each year.
It will be truly different from the standard meetings with 10 minute non-stop
presentations on 15 different topics- there are enough of those already. Its main
concern will be to make a general survey on a single important topic (vitrectomy,
RD, diabetes, ERM, ARMD, trauma, …) and to compare the different European concepts
on the topic regardless of any time limit. Each team will have the opportunity
to explain its way of practicing, and above all to give the philosophical and
practical reasons that lead them to make such a choice. Thus, each participant
will be able to understand the different concepts and to lean towards the philosophy
he/she feels closer to.
- A 15 days "Vitreo-retinal Training School" teaching the semiological,
strategical and practical basis to students as well as surgeons eager to enter
this new field.
