Vitreoretinal surgery has been the most astoundingly innovative subspecialty of
ophthalmology in recent times and European ophthalmologists have been and are
continuing to play major roles in keeping this an exciting and dynamic field.
Spending too much time in the operating theatre, however, and being hampered by
national and language barriers, European vitreoretinal surgeons have not had much
time to notice that Europe is rapidly uniting. The implications for their practice
and for the future of vitreoretinal surgery have not yet been considered but are
likely to be tremendous.

Our aims are to :
. Facilitate dialogue among European colleagues.
There should be as much communication among our European colleagues as there is with our American ones.
. Promote European ideas and techniques.
How many of us have felt isolated and distraught when defending their ideas on the international scene ?
. Become active in politics to ensure that we can provide our input in Brussels in matters concerning our future interests.
. Develop and promote new methods of teaching and student/master interaction in this highly complex field.
