The Role of Vitreoretinal Surgery in Eye Reconstruction after Severe Injury

Victor Bykov, George Petriashvili

Russia

Mechanical injuries of the eye, causing massive destruction of eye tissues, the lens and vitreous body usually lead to eye subatrophy. The last two decades have seen considerable progress in the prevention and treatment of this serious complication. In such cases, however,
ophthalmologists efforts were principally aimed at saving the eye as a cosmetic organ. We believe that contemporary microsurgery of severe penetrating injuries of the eye should make use of up-to-date achievements of vitreoretinal surgery.
We have developed and tested a system of intraocular surgery for patients with with severe mechanical injuries. This system has proven effective in more than 1,500 cases, making it possible considerably to reduce the number of enucleations and in some cases successfully to reconstruct subatrophic eyes and also restore subject vision.
