Posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies and the lens

Purpose:We evaluate the final lens status in the eyes with an IOFB in the posterior segment of the eye.
Materials and Methods: Between 1989-2000 we treated 154 eyes in 153 patients.
Results: The lens was finalyy clear only in 26 eyes, peropheral opacities were present in 13 eyes and in one eye is the lens opaque. 47 eyes are aphakic and 40 are pseudophakic. Lens was removed with 7 eyes and 19 eyes are phthisic. In one eye are only lens rests.
Conclusions:Finally was the lens clear only in 26 (16,9%) eyes. Whenever is it possible we try to save the lens, or at least the rests of the lens capsile. If it is possible to remove the IOFB from the eye with partially cataractous lens, we performe the cataract surgery later.
