Purpose: To assess
the outcome and complications after combined cataract extraction, vitrectomy,
intraocular foreign body extraction and intraocular lens implantation
surgery in patients with concomitant traumatic cataract and vitreoretinal
abnormalities caused by IOFBa.
Methods: Retrospective review of 68 eyes with intraocular foreign body
injuries undergoing four combined surgery. IOFBs included copper 19, iron
23, plastic 11, glass 8, stone 3, other 4. Cataract extraction included
aspiration, lensectomu, phacoemulsification or fragmatome. 9 of 68 eyes
had retinal detachment before operation.
Result: 100% IOFBs were successfully removed. Endophthalmitis developed
in 3%. Postoperative vision improved in 71% of eyes. deteriorated in10%.
PVR developed in 12%. Reoperations were needed for intravitreal hemorrhage
in 4 eyes (6%), retinal detachment in 7 eyes (10%).
Conclusion: This combined cataract and vitreoretinal surgery for treatment
of intraocular foreign body injuries is considered advantageous for removing
peripheral vitreous, reducing the risk of endophthalmitis and PVR development.
This combined surgery is important for preserving visual function and
preventing complications.
