The
Use Of Temporary Queratophrosthesis In Complex Cases Of Trauma And PVR

In those patients
that show corneal opacity that prevents the correct intraocular visualization
and vitreoretinal disease that should be surgically treated , we have
three main options:
1.- open sky surgery, 2. - Penetrating Keratoplasty and to wait for the
corneal transparency and 3.- to use a temporary Keratophrosthesis and
to carry out the endocular surgery in the same surgical procedure .
These cases mainly come from severe trauma and proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
We are going to show you the main principles using Eckardt temporary Keratophrosthesis.
Eckardt Keratophrosthesis was described in 1987 by Eckardt and it is built
in silicone material showing a round plate of 10 millimeters with a cylinder
of 7 millimeters that is anchored after the corneal trephination of 6.5
millimeters by means of 4 9/0 Nylon sutures. Through it an excellent visualization
is obtained being able to use jointly with regular precorneal lenses and
with wide field systems
