Combined PPV AND Phaco : economical problems and discussion

Frank Koch

Frankfurt, Germany

From the medical point of view, combining PPV and PHACO with implantation of an intraocular lens is widely accepted and avoids to operate on patients eyes twice. Except in uveitis patients, an intensified postoperative antiinflammatory therapy almost always guarrantees a successful outcome.
However, in lots of places in Germany, the payment for combined procedures is significantly lower than the payment for two seperate interventions. The author would like to open and stimulate the discussion about the situation in different European countries.
