EPISCLERAL
BUCKLING IN THE TREAMENT OF SEVERE PROLIFERATIVE VITREORETINOPATHY: TIME
CONSUMING OR USEFUL ADJUNCT?
Jean-François le Rouic
Nantes, France
Purpose: to argue for the usefulness of encircling buckling in the treatment
of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR)
Methods: presentation of demonstrating cases in which an encircling buckle
was helpful to maintain the retina attached after surgery for severe PVR.
Results: The use of scleral buckling may 1) reduce the indication for
retinotomy and its related complications 2) allow retinal reapplication
despite anterior recurrence of PVR membranes or incomplete peeling.
Conclusion: Although scleral buckling may appear as a fastidious as, old-fashioned,
and time consuming technique in a vitrectomy era it should still be considered
as an important part in the treatment of severe PVR.
