IINTEREST OF THE 25 GAUGE TECHNIQUE DURING SUCCESSIVE SURGERIES FOR RETINAL DETACHMENT WITH VITREO RETINAL PROLIFERATION (VRP)
Jean Pierre Hubschman
Saint Jean de Luz, France

The 25 G vitrectomy technique has been available in Europe for a few months. This technique allows for a vitreo-retinal surgery which is less intrusive. As a matter of fact, the use of 25 gauge trans-conjonctivo-scleral micro guiding canulas enables surgeons to introduce into the vitreo-retinal area the different tools (forceps, hooks and probes..) to perform surgery. At the end of the surgery, the easy extraction of the micro guiding canulas, which is almost instantaneous, definitely seals the sclerotomies. Retinal detachments with VRP are often at the root of several successive operations that are traumatic for the different ocular layers. This new vitrectomy technique without conjonctival opening allows to operate on multi-operated eyes which are already damaged in order to minimize surgical trauma and so to improve the patients' post operatory comfort as well as their visual recovery.
