ZIVOJNOVIC AWARD Sunday, September 14th, 2003 ; 12:35 - 13:00 FROM
THE ADVENT OF VITRECOMY TO MEMBRANE PEELING TO PVR PREVENTION IN 35 YEARS The historical development of vitreous surgery and the instrumentation designed for PVR treatment will be highlighted. The 1970-1978 clinical results, mainly the failures, set a rationale for PVR prevention which lead to the development of two controlled drug release systems designed to prevent recurrent PVR: a biodegradable implant that release an antimitotic and a siloxane based implant with slow release of an anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative agent. The successful experimental in vivo studies performed in animals lead to two ongoing European clinical trials. The experimental studies and preliminary results from the clinical trials will be presented. NB: The research described above was performed together with the OBC team as well as by several investigators from different nations and was supported in part by the NIH-NEI and the Veterans Administration, the Florida Lions Eye Bank, the Henri and Flore Lesieur Foundation and an unrestricted grant from Research to Prevent Blindness. The author has no commercial interests in any of the devices and techniques that will be presented.
