CLASSIFICATIONS
ON PVR
Jean-François Le Rouic
Nantes, France
Introduction: To describe
the evolution of the classifications proposed for PVR and to analyse their
possible insufficiencies.
Methods: Litterature review and personnal reflexions
Results: Different clinical classifications for PVR have been proposed
from 1983 to 1991. They progressively took into account the different
prognostic factors encountered in eyes with RD complicated by PVR development.
The 1991 updated classification allows a comprehensive and fully detailed
description of the fundus of eyes with PVR. However, this classification
is rarely used in daily practice and in the litterature because of its
complexity. This classification makes also no case of the the evolution
of the PVR process, and the maturation of the membranes which are probably
of great prognostic value.
Conclusion: The 1991 updated classification for PVR provides a comprehensive
description of fundus patterns. It is however rarely used probably due
to its complexity and does not consider the maturity of the PVR membranes
which is a major prognostic factor.
