SEVILLE
See movie
While walking in Sevilla you will catch the extraordinary emotional atmosphere typical of cities with a very rich past, very similar to the one you experienced in Venice or Prague. This is why we will try to integrate our congress into the town’s history this year.
Sevilla has been punctuated by different influences that you can feel one after the other in the 2,000 years old historical center:
-
The Roman period marked by some aqueduct remnants.
- The great Moors invasion (712-1248), influencing the Sevillian architecture, and leaving us the Alcazar, a wonderful Royal Palace that we will visit on Sunday.
- The Golden Age Christian period, when Sevilla was the only Spanish gate to America. At that time, the city was one of the largest and richest cities in the world. Gold and silver were stocked in towers. One of the largest gothic cathedrals worldwide with the well preserved Giralda (originally a minaret) as bell tower, was built (visit on Sunday). Sevillian houses do not take second place to Venecian ones.
- Two international expositions:
The Ibero-American exposition in 1929; pavillons were built in the city center, in a giant park (the Maria Luisa Park) where we will have our Gala diner.
The 1992 Universal Exposition took place on Cartuja Island, where our conference center is located.
- And, above all, the special Andalous art of living. People meet in bars (bodegas), drink beer and vino fino (similar to Xeres), eat sea food and slices of expensive ham (pata negra) and speak of the last soccer game or of the last toros they saw in the Maestranza, the famous plaza de toros of Sevilla. We will reproduce this art of living during a Sunday night «tapas tour». |

| CONGRESS TOPIC: VASCULAR PATHOLOGIES |
The 2009 EVRS Congress topic is designed to be a continuation of last year’s «Controversies» Congress. During the Marrakesh meeting, a lot of new and unconventional tools and techniques, concepts and experiences, were presented and the reasons for applying these were explained. The sessions stirred enormous interest and extensive discussions were conducted in an open-minded spirit with great regard for unconventional ideas.
The EVRS membership survey demonstrated that European surgeons differ in their approaches in many basic things among each other and with respect to their overseas colleagues.
Now it is perhaps the time to go further in the discussion on only one topic: the VASCULAR PATHOLOGIES.
In order to discuss more deeply on our differences, to analyze more precisely the reasons of our choices, we will chose «The EVRS Talk-Show» Format - a Totally New Congress Concept.
Instead of individual presentations, which frequently are fraught with repetition and redundant information, at EVRS meetings, the speakers are invited to participate in ”talk-shows“. Scientific sessions are arranged according to subjects under discussion and prior to the meeting the moderators arrange the pertinent points of the presenters into finely choreographed forums, where all the participants in the session are able to illustrate their arguments from their own laptops and at the same time participate in extensive discussions among the audience and each other.
A high-tech audiovisual setup, includes provisions for up to 12 simultaneously connected laptops and an array of videocameras projecting speakers and moderators alike onto a huge screen. Questions from the audience can be asked from the floor or alternatively by SMS so that they can be integrated into the discussion.
By this revolutionary concept redundancy is eliminated and the sessions take on a free and lively interactive format unthinkable in other more traditional scientific meetings.
This year let us try to critically analyze if fashionable techniques or non-traditional treatments are actually more beneficial for our patients compared to classical ones. Let us try to discover whether maybe some of the new measures might be the result of “encouragement” by industry or an individual’s natural urge of being innovative even if it is for the sake of innovation.
Let us stimulate exchange between the promoters of new drugs or non-established therapeutical approaches and the defenders of standard therapies or classical instruments. This should compel everyone to explain more thoroughly the basis for each individual decision and from this confrontation answers to our questions will hopefully emerge.
You are therefore requested to preferably present your ways of doing things in all the different aspects of medical and surgical retina with the idea of a debate in mind:
– If your choice is in fashion or unconventional, you will be asked to explain the advantages you found in your innovation.
– If your choice is more traditional, you will have to answer the question why you resisted the new trends.
Presentations in this general spirit will be treated preferentially.
Therefore, don’t hesitate to send many different abstracts or feel free to create posters, which will be discussed within the sessions wherever possible.
Please note that only online abstract submission is allowed. The only selection criteria is that during the discussion you must be able to defend your approach.

| CONGRESS FORMAT |
The
10th EVRS Meeting will follow the EVRS
congress philosophy. No invited lecturers. The program will be built by the sole abstract submissions. Each member will pay his registration fee and will be treated equally. The goal is not to give an audience to a certain number of lecturers in order to promote them but really to share our tricks, our knowledge and our experience. Never more than this year, the congress will be closer to the EVRS fundamentals.
The
10th EVRS Meeting will have the usual Meeting Policies. |
